I don’t bake

image

I don’t bake.
It’s not that I can’t,
Actually, I can,
And if in the mood
I rather enjoy it!
But alas,
I must admit,
I don’t like the feeling
Of flour on my fingers.
I’m a clean freak —
I don’t like the mess.

I’ll cook though.
I love to experiment
With my cooking.
Blending flavors,
Taking chances,
Doing the unusual,
Ignoring the recipe.

Baking needs too many rules.
Perhaps that’s why it peeves me so.
Measurements need to be precise
Or things will go wrong.
I hate that!
Cooking gives me more freedom
To explore my eccentric side.
I guess one can experiment
With baking just the same,
But I know what my strengths are,
Baking is not one of them.
At least I’m honest!

But then again,
A wise soul
Has been encouraging me
To dig deep and challenge myself.
So perhaps I’ll take a stab at baking
When the weather cools a bit.
Because there’s no baking
Happening here in the summer.
Remember that saying,
Get out of the kitchen
If you can’t take the heat.
Hey, you don’t have to tell me twice!

    1. It’s all good. I used to cook up a storm in my younger years. Now I find it such a chore. Especially since munchkin is so picky with food. I’m hoping that changes as she get older. If not I’ll be teaching her to cook for herself. One less chore for mama to do! 😁

      1. Good idea! When my sister used to visit me, she would say “if you go to her house, you will starve to death!”
It’s true…my refrigerator has a drawer full of Boost…and nothing else.
When my son stayed with me for a few weeks, I bought the food and he cooked….and ate!

    1. Nope. Not one bit!!!
Munchkin put a couple cake mixes in our shopping basket last week and I promptly took them out and instructed her to go find cupcakes. No mother of the year award for me, but hey, I’m not gonna pretend to enjoy that kind of torture 😁

  1. I’ve never really been into baking either. I really couldn’t afford it when I was younger, and when I could finally afford it, it was too late. The desire just wasn’t there. I did try some simple recipes over the years for my daughters, however they’re both grown now and that as they say is that.😊

    1. I totally get it!
Munchkin has been nudging me lately since she’s very intent on helping in the kitchen. I guess that’s a good sign that we’ll have some girly fun down the road.

I didn’t have that with my mom. It always felt like more of a chore with her — prepping me to be woman of the house. While my brother was prepped to be lazy. ☺

I hope to change that with munchkin.

      1. I was fortunate that my mother never pushed us toward the kitchen. Although Mom spent a lot of time in the kitchen herself. She’s a fantastic cook. πŸ™‚ I’m sure Munchkin will love her time spent with you in the kitchen. πŸ™‚ Mine loved it when they were very young. πŸ™‚

  2. Haha, A. you have found I possible resource in me, I have been a food service professional most of my life. Yes I deviate tremendously from recipes for savory cooking, and yes baking is extremely more chemically sensitive, with the main ingredients, however with practice, you know like prayer and meditation, you can experiment, starting with spices, flavorings and then when you understand what the function of wet vs dry what is giving structure, leavening, texture to your product, you can experiment. Yes I’ve even done some pastry chefing…did my internship during culinary program at CCA in S.F. with a pastry chef

    1. Nice.
      Key ‘ingredients’ here are
      a) desire
      b) practice

If I did it more often I’d be better but the desire has to be there. If I wake up and decide to bake, better believe I’m in a fantastic mood with way too much time on my hands ! Or it could also be my kid has been bugging me to bake for weeks! 😁
