Agony Of Love Series

Part 17: The Therapist

image

Natasha Crawford
was Mary’s therapist
back in Missouri.

Mary saw her secretly for a year
as she tried to rationalize
the loss of her friend Nina
and her ability
to communicate with her
even after she had passed on.

For a while Mary struggled
to determine if what she could see
was real or just a figment
of her imagination.

In therapy,
Ms Crawford dug deep,
trying to get to the root
of Mary’s obsession with death.

Then one day,
without any warning,
Mary called to cancel
her appointment
and all subsequent visits.
She never heard from
Mary again until today…

The phone rings…

Ms Crawford:
Hello.
This is Natasha Crawford speaking,
how may I assist you?

Mary:
Hello Ms Crawford. It’s Mary.
Mary Leftwich.
I was your patient 6 years ago.
Do you remember me?

Ms Crawford:
Mary?
Oh my goodness, Mary!
Of course I remember you!
You ended your sessions
and I never understood why!

Mary:
Yes, I’m really sorry about
how I ended things,
but there was a reason for that.

I had a significant breakthrough
and it terrified me to no end.
I needed to get out of Missouri.
I needed to get away from Nina.

Ms Crawford:
What do you mean
‘get away from Nina’?
Was she visiting you
more frequently?

Mary:
No, not more often,
she was showing up
with other people too.
She wanted me to talk
to people she’d met
on the other side.

Ms Crawford:
Oh my goodness!
That IS terrifying!

Part 16: Coffee at 5pm

image

Her head is pounding.
The Agony she feels
Leaves her depleted.
This isn’t what she expected.
But then again she was foolish
To think it could have gone
Any other way.

Coffee at 5pm
Is probably a bad idea,
But then again,
Looks like she won’t
Get much sleep tonight.

Her memories of Nina
Are somewhat sacred.
She shared some of them
With Jack over the years,
But she often wondered
If he was really comfortable
With the knowledge
That she could see the ghosts
Of those who’ve passed on.

She emerged from their bedroom
To find Jack dozing on the sofa.
He looked exhausted with worry.
She felt a bit of guilt
For staying locked away so long,
But she had been down this road
With him before.

She wonders now
If a life with him
Will be the right path for her.
It was time to hash this out
Once and for all.

She walked pass him
To the kitchen.
A fresh pot of coffee
Was imperative!
Within a few minutes
The percolating sounds
And the heavenly aroma filled the air.
She stood at the kitchen window
Lost in thought
As she gazed out to the pond.

Jack:
Mary?
Will you please talk to me?
No matter how bad things get
We always talk.
Can we please discuss this?

Mary:
Yes,  it’s time.
But first I need some coffee…

Part 15: Missing Nina.

image

Clenched in her fist
She held the red pendant
Given to her
By her best friend Nina.

The memories of
Their childhood fun together
Flooded her mind endlessly.
She was motionless.

How sad to think
Her best friend was now gone!
Such a beautiful spirit.
Such an independent soul.

The funeral was just 2 hours away.
She still had no clue what to say.
A eulogy? How inappropriate!
Nina visits her all the time.

They sit and talk and laugh for hours.
To her, Nina was very much alive.
How does one speak of someone
Who is alive as if they were dead?

“Mary honey, it’s time to go say goodbye…”
“OK mom, I’ll be right there!”

Mary walked into the chapel
And stood at the opening of the casket.
There, in a beautiful pink dress,
Laid her childhood friend.
Leaning in close,
Mary kissed her cheek.

Then, she whispered in Nina’s ear,
“How do I speak of you
Without using the phrase
I see dead people?”

There was a knock on the door…

Jack:
Mary, you’ve been
locked in there for ages.
Please let me in?
Can we please take about this?
Mary please let me explain?

Mary had been crying for so long that she drifted off to sleep. She hadn’t thought about her friend Nina much since she left Missouri. She needed to get away from her problems for a while. Perhaps it was time to pay Nina’s grave a visit.

Part 14: The Confession

image

Mary:
Honey, you were tossing
and turning all night.
Seems you didn’t
sleep much at all,
what’s wrong?

Jack:
Work was rough yesterday.
There’s a huge issue
which needs to be
resolved quickly
or it can cost us.

Mary:
Is it a confidential issue?
I’m always happy to listen.
Perhaps I can offer
a fresh perspective!

Jack:
Just out of curiosity,
if you had to choose
another state to live
where would you want to go?

Mary:
Umm, I’ve never
given that much thought.
There are many places
I’d love to visit,
but I never imagined
leaving Boston.

I moved here
for a better opportunity
that wasn’t available in Missouri.
I guess if I had to move
it would be where I’d get
the security I’ve found here.

I don’t know…
New York maybe?
Why are you
asking about moving?

Jack:
It’s because of something
Mr. Radford said
in our meeting yesterday.

Mary:
You’re being
awfully mysterious Jack.
Is there something
you’re not telling me?

Jack:
Actually, yes,
I have a confession…
There’s something
you need to know.

Jack retrieved
the recording device
from his briefcase,
placed it on the table,
then pressed play.

As she listened,
Mary became red
as tears filled her eyes.
She was livid
and disappointed.

She had warned him
she would not tolerate
being made to look like a fool.
She had warned him
of the dangers of flirting!

Mary:
Jack, you told me this was over!
You told me you fixed this!
YOU TOLD ME THIS WAS OVER!!!

Mary left the room in tears,
she couldn’t believe
Jack’s silly games were now
turning their lives upside down.

Part 13: The Meeting Continues

image

Jack’s jaw dropped
as he fumbled to find
the chair behind him.
He thought for sure
his plan would work.

He thought with all
this evidence against Carol
she’d be fired for sure!
He underestimated her…

He sat for a few minutes
in Mr Radford’s office
completely speechless.
He didn’t want to ask
too many personal questions
but he needed to know
a few things to decide
how to proceed.

Jack:
Sir, with all due respect,
why can’t you just
report this to headquarters?

Mr. Radford:
Jack, I’ve been
with this company for 29 yrs.
I’m set to retire in seven.
I tried to fire her,
and she threatened
to report me to HR
and headquarters
for inappropriate conduct
in the workplace.

She wanted me
to have a relationship
with her and I refused.
She called my wife
and told her to speak to me
about flirting or she’d report me
to headquarters.

My wife was livid
and threatened to divorce me.
I got a recording, just like you,
to prove to my wife
I was being set up.

My wife suggested that
I take the recording
to headquarters
to protect myself
and save my job.

Jack, my meeting
at headquarters
ended just like
our meeting did today.
She’s got her hooks
in Crabwell too!

Jack:
Oh my god, sir!
That’s insane!

Mr. Radford:
Yeah, insane isn’t even the word!
Jack, I’ve worked really hard
for this company.
I have a family.
I ‘need’ my retirement packet!
It’s too late for me to start over now.
Not when I’m so close to the end!

How am I supposed
to explain to my wife
that I lost everything
over a minor indiscretion
with someone half my age?

I was just like you Jack,
I just flirted a bit with her
and this is what happened!

I thought I was
just having a bit
of harmless fun…
now I can lose everything!

Jack:
Geez sir, I had no idea!
So what are you saying?
Should I just play along
with what Carol wants?
Or should I tell Mary everything?

Mr. Radford:
That’s up to you, Jack.
You’re still young.
If Mary is the one for you
I suggest you tell her
and get the heck out of this town —
start fresh somewhere else.

I can always give you
a glowing reference.
You’re excellent at your job!
I may be your only help
if you act fast.
There’s no telling who else
Carol has ‘in her web!

If you choose to stay here,
Carol can make things
very unpleasant,
and I have a feeling
Mary won’t stick around
if she’s forced to deal
with a mess like this.
She’s young, beautiful, smart,
and certainly she’ll look
for someone else.

Jack:
Yes sir, you’re right…

Part 12: The Meeting

image

There was a knock on the door…

Mr. Radford:
Come in Jack,  close the door,
you’re right on time!
I’m all ears,
what did you want to discuss?

Jack:
Good morning sir.
Well first,  there’s something
I need you to listen to…

Mr. Radford:
Okay, let’s have it!

Jack retrieved a tiny recording device from his pocket and pressed play…

Mr. Radford listened intently,  then sunk backward into his oversized office chair as he slowly spun to face the window behind him.

Mr. Radford:
Jack, Jack, Jack…

Jack:
Yes sir, I know how this looks
but nothing happened with her.
I flirted a bit, but she took it seriously
and now she’s making a mess of things.

She even put a note in my pocket
which Mary found.
I tried to clear things up to save my relationship with Mary,
but Carol has another agenda here!

I can’t lose my job over this,
and I’m not gonna lose Mary either.
I’m bringing this to you
because she needs to be stopped.

Mr. Radford sighed heavily as he slowly spun his chair ’round to face Jack.

Mr. Radford:
Jack, this is quite a mess you’re in,
but I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do!
You see, Jack, I’m just like you,
she’s got me too!

Part 11: The Plan

image

Jack was happy Mary came home
but he still had his mess to clean up.
He had to talk to Carol, he had a plan!

The following day…

Jack:
Good morning Carol.
Can I talk to you for a minute?

Carol:
Of course Jack,
I will always make time for you!

They stepped into a small, vacant conference room and Carol shut the door.

Carol:
So what’s on your mind Jack?

Jack:
Well, I thought a lot
about our last conversation
and I’m not comfortable
with this little game you’re trying to play.

I love my girlfriend
and I can’t have a relationship
with you just because
you won’t take no for an answer.

Carol:
See, Jack, that’s where you’re wrong.
I always get my way,
that’s how it’s always been
and that’s how it’s always going to be!

I’ve made ‘bigger’ men than you
crumble like a broken statue.
You, my dear Jack,
are ‘a walk in the park’.

Try to resist me
or try to get me fired
and you’ll never work
in this town again!

So, my sweet Jack,
when do we go on our first date?
Do you have a special place in mind?
I’m dying to get all dressed up!

Jack:
You’re unbelievable, Carol!
Clearly your out of your mind!
So this is what you do?
Blackmail guys for the fun of it?

Carol:
Oh, not just guys, their wives too.
Everyone has to be on board Jack,
then it’s really fun!
So Jack, are you ready for a little fun?

Jack:
Omg Carol, you’re insane!
I have a meeting.
We’ll discuss this later.
I can’t believe you’re such a lunatic.

Carol:
Be nice Jack,
don’t make me report you to HR.
Such language is not tolerated here,
the word harassment comes to mind.

Unscheduled meetings
in the conference room
are frown upon too.
They’d be curious about our rendezvous!

Jack:
Geez Carol! I’m done.
I have to get back to work.
See you around.
You’re unbelievable!

Jack exists and checks his watch.
His 10 am meeting is in 5 minutes.
He needed to get ready…

Part 10: The Decision

image

Jack had to decide
between a fantastic job
which it took him years to land
or his relationship with Mary.

He was roughly one year
from making VP of Sales
and his ability to schmooze
is what got him there.

Now how could he use those skills
to get him out of this predicament?
He had a lot to lose on either end
and this would be one
of the toughest decisions of his life!

To include Mary in his plans
would be the wise thing to do.
After all, he owed it to her
To make all this right.

There was a knock on the hotel door.
Mary wasn’t expecting any visitors or room service. She was confused…

Mary:
Jack! What are you doing here?
I told you I’m not coming home
until you fix this mess!
I’m not gonna have you
make a fool of me Jack, I WON’T!!!

Jack:
Well that’s why I’m here.
I spoke to her.
I explained that I’m
in a committed relationship
and that what she wants can’t happen.
I also apologized
that my actions were misleading —
that she mistook my playfulness
as something more.
Mary, I made things right.

Mary:
So how did she take the news?

Jack:
She was upset but she understood.
Things might be
a little awkward for a while
but it should blow over soon.

Mary:
I hope so…
I’ve dealt with a lot of this crap
with other guys,
and at this point in my life,
I have no tolerance for any of it!
If something like this happens again
believe me Jack, I’M DONE!

Jack:
I promise you Mary,
this will never happen again.
Please give me a chance
to make this up to you?
Please come home?

Without a word,
Mary got up from the bed
and went to the hotel phone.

Front desk receptionist:
Front desk, Rosemary speaking,
how may I help you?

Mary:
This is room 528.
Can you please have my bill ready?
I’m checking out. Thank you.

Front desk receptionist:
Very well ma’am,
we’ll process that right away.

There wasn’t much to pack
as Mary had left the house in a hurry
with her heart in her hands.

She had called in sick from work
to give herself time to think.
Those 3 days felt like 3 weeks.

The checkout process was quick
and Jack paid the bill, and rightfully so!

The ride home was mostly silent,
with bits of awkward conversation
about the cat and the house plants.

Jack was elated Mary was coming home,
but he feared if Mary knew what really transpired she’d end it all.

He was a bit arrogant too,
he felt he could ‘HANDLE’ this mess
on his own. He believed he had a plan that would fix everything!

Part 9: His Dilemma

image

The torment he feels
Is in part, his own doing.
He now realizes the danger of his actions.
He is no longer innocent as he thought.

Conflicted, he must decide
To either play along to save his job,
Or confess to the one he loves
To save his relationship.

His dilemma is real.
His agony is something
He foolishly did not anticipate.
His carelessness can cost him everything!

Part 8: The Talk

image

The next day at work, Jack did as he promised…

Jack:
Good morning Carol,
can I talk to you
in private for a second?

Carol:
Oh sure, Jack.
Anything for you.

Jack:
About the note you put in my pocket…
I’m really sorry if I lead you on,
that was never my intention.
I’m just really playful
and I guess I took it too far.

I have a girlfriend.
Perhaps I should have been
more clear about that,
so I apologize if I wasn’t.
I’m really, really sorry.

Carol:
Oh Jack, you silly boy…
Of course I knew
you had a girlfriend!
I asked around
and found out all about you.

Jack:
Oh! Whoa! So what were you hoping
would happen here?

Carol:
Well Jack, it’s really
not that complicated!
You know you’re attracted to me,
I can tell.
And now you know
the attraction is mutual.
So…

Jack:
Well Carol, I’m sorry,
but nothing’s going to happen.
My girlfriend found that note,
and now she won’t even come home
until I fix this mess!

Carol:
Oh, you poor baby,
that’s too bad.
Is there trouble in paradise?

Jack:
This isn’t funny, Carol!
You? You and I? No!
I… I can never do that to my girlfriend.
I love her too much.

Carol:
Well, see, I don’t think
you really have a choice, Jack.
If you don’t want to see me
then life here at work can get really,
really complicated for you.

Jack:
What? Wait a minute!
What are you doing?
Are you…?
Are you black-mailing me?

Part 7: The Details

image

Jack:
See Mary, that’s where you’re wrong.
She’s new.
Most of my interactions with her
Are in passing. No deep conversations.

Mary:
Go on…

Jack:
Do I think she’s attractive? Yes.
I can appreciate
The physical beauty in any woman!
But I find emotional and intellectual beauty
More appealing. You know that!

Do I think she’s smart? Yes.
She does a great job
With her presentations
And she’s a good team player.

Am I attracted to her intelligence? Yes.
I find all intelligence to be attractive
Regardless of gender. You know that also!

Was I too playful with her? Perhaps.
It’s just who I am.
I’m always my real self with everyone.
You know I like being authentic,
But sometimes I go too far, I know that.

Was this one of those times?
Perhaps.
If I lead her on, Mary,
It was completely unintentional.

I would never purposely ruin
What you and I have.
I never want to hurt you,
I love you too much!

Mary:
OKay, well that’s good to know.

Jack:
First thing tomorrow I’ll talk to her.
I’ll fix this Mary, I promise!
I know I’m not perfect
And I know you never ask me to be,
But I’m gonna have to work on this.
I don’t want you ever thinking
You can’t trust me.
Now will you please come home?

Part 6: The Wrong Answer

image

Jack:
I took too long to answer?
What does that mean?

Mary:
The devil is in the details,  Jack,
I’m not an idiot!
It’s one thing to admit you think
That she or any woman is attractive,
That’s normal,  you’re human.
But it’s something else entirely
When you can’t exercise self control.
If you don’t know where to draw the line
With your playfulness
Then you’re setting yourself up
For problems!

Jack:
What do you mean?

Mary:
Well, a woman who knows
You have a girlfriend
Just put a love note in your pocket.
She’s either a home wrecker by nature
Or was given the impression by you that
a) you’re not happy in your relationship at home or
b) you don’t mind having something extra on the side.

Jack:
Geez Mary,
Why in the world would I do that?
I love you, I value our relationship,
I have no need for anyone else.
I was just playing around!

Mary:
OK Jack, then answer me this,
Does she know you have a girlfriend?

Jack:
Umm, I’m not sure.
It never really came up!

Mary:
WRONG ANSWER, JACK !
That right there is why
She thinks she has a chance!
You’re acting like you’re single
When you’re not.
Why would you do that?

Part 5: The Phone Call

image

She summoned the strength
To fix the ugly mess
She saw in the mirror,
But what really needed fixing
Was her wounded heart!

Her phone rang…

Him:
Baby where are you?
Please come home?
We can fix this, I promise!
It’s all a huge misunderstanding!!!
Can we just talk this out like always?

Her:
I’m at a hotel.
I couldn’t breathe, Jack.
Finding that note damn near killed me!
How could you do this to me?
How could you do this to us?

Him:
I’m sorry, Mary,
I was just being playful.
I really didn’t mean anything by it.
I joke around with everyone at the office.
You know how I am!

Her:
Yes, I know you’re playful,
It’s one of the things I love about you,
But there has to be something
That made her think
There was more to your playfulness.

Him:
Honestly Mary, I don’t know!
I’m the same way with her
As I am with everyone.
I honestly don’t know
What made her think there was more!

Her:
Jack, please don’t play me for a fool?
Don’t play the dumb card with me.
You should know by now
I see right through that kind of crap!
I’ve dated enough sleezy guys to know.
I thought you were different!

Him:
Mary, please, I’m not lying.
Nothing happened!

Her:
Just answer me one question,
Are you attracted to her?
A woman can tell
By simple actions
If a guy is into her.

Long pause…

Him:
Well she is attractive…

Her:
You took way too long
To answer my question, Jack.
I’m starting to think
You’re not as innocent
As you’d like me to believe.

Part 4: Her Ache

image

She needs to rest her brain;
Too many thoughts swirl within;
So she lays down
But rest won’t come.

The lonely hotel room
Absent of anything familiar,
Makes her numb, which is perhaps best —
Her agony is unreal.

She’s alone and in need of comfort.
He would always be
Her shoulder to cry on,
But now he is the source of her pain.

Insecurities bombard her now;
She’s terrified!
She doesn’t want to lose him,
But the hurt he caused is unbearable.

Her heart needs answers.
She must know the truth.
She must return to face her fate;
She needs peace.

So she breathes —
Deep, slow breaths,
Hoping to calm herself;
Hoping to ease the pain.

They spoke of forever,
Their shared dreams
And hopes now shattered.
Was it all a lie?

Her ache pierces through her soul
To find a shred of hope.
Is this the end?
Or can they fix this?

Part 3: His Mistake

image

He came home
Expecting to find her there
But she was gone.
There was no note.

The house was clean.
Dinner was on the stove
But not complete.
Where was she?

The door to the washer was open
With clothes inside,
But his pants and the opened note
Lay on the floor.

He froze.
She wasn’t supposed to see that note.
He meant to get rid of it but forgot.
How dumb!

He flirted with that girl
From time to time
But nothing ever came of it
Or so he thought!

In his head it was all harmless fun.
He was attracted to her
But loved his girlfriend.
Being playful was just his nature.

He never expected her to fall for him.
He never expected his silly antics
Would turn into anything more.
He didn’t understand the power of his words.

Part 2: The Note

image

She wasn’t supposed to find that note.
She was doing his laundry as always.
Just trying to be a good girlfriend.
Cleaning, cooking, washing,
Just trying making him feel appreciated.

She thought he and that girl were just friends.
He always spoke of her so fondly, so casually.
Now she’s leaving him love notes?
Is there more to this?
Or is it just a silly thing that will go away?

She held the note.
She was frozen in her stance
For what seemed like an eternity.
Her whole world stood still. She felt sick.

She read that note at least ten times
Trying to find any possible hidden meanings.
There were too many questions in her head.
She felt weak.

Her heart felt like it was being squeezed
By both the hand which wrote that note
And by the one to whom she gave it freely.
She needed air. She needed to leave.
The note and his pants were left on the floor.

Part 1: Blindsided

image

She didn’t sleep a wink that night;
Her insides were twisted up in knots.
All night the words she read
Haunted her every being.

She couldn’t believe what was happening,
How was it that someone
Who said he loved her so much
Could hurt her this badly — So carelessly?

The agony was unreal!
So much for openness and honesty.
Her heart was aching.
She didn’t know what to do.
